Central Station - Transport Hubs
Stakeholder: Railcorp
BRIEF
Minimise antisocial behaviour in Central station around the Countrylink concourse, Platform one and the external Light Rail platform.
PROBLEMS
In response to the brief the following solutions were proposed:
BUDDY: Interactive Lighting System - Making Central Station Safe and Vibrant
An interactive lighting system which reacts to movement, proximity and sound. it moves with passengers along corridors, tunnels and darkened areas increasing the safety and security of the station whilst also improving the overall vibrancy and beauty of Central station and does not interfere with its architecture and heritage.
BENEFITS
Outreach Support - Providing another line out of Central
RailCorp is seeking solutions to reduce instances of anti-social behaviour and petty crime in Central Station. Many offenders are vulnerable people who may be homeless, mentally ill, substance dependent, victims of abuse or experiencing crisis.
PROBLEMS
If you see someone at Central who might be homeless and in need of support call the Salvos on their freecall number 1800 123 456 and they will respond directly.
The Outreach Support service is a joint initiative of RailCorp and the Salvation Army Inner City Community Services Centre.
A dedicated full-time outreach worker, supported by a team of trained volunteers would be on call to assist transit officers and station staff in managing anti-social behaviour and identifying and helping people in need.
The service would be based at the Salvation Army's Inner City Community Services Centre (600m from Central) where people in need can connect with the services that can help them.
BENEFITS
Interactive Digital Projection
To resolve these issues, an increase in natural surveillance and high flow of human traffic is vital. An interactive floor projector technology best achieves this idea. This is installed in vacant, empty spaces such as the Concourse area, and central platforms. It projects images on to the floor that combines intuitive human body motion with floors and surface areas.
It easily turns open floor spaces into experience of movement, action and fun that enhance the interaction and involvement of humans walking by. This can be easily set up, assemble and diverse visual effects and templates can be used for interactive display.
BENEFITS
This interactive light projector is an effective tool in capturing and engaging people with the space and the environment. They are particularly activated during the night and in poorly lit areas to bring in more people as it increases natural surveillance, ultimately reducing crimes.
It plays a significant role in offering commuters a sense of security and safety, particularly for those travelling late at night through projection of bright light and colours. The images change every 5mins and are sensitive to movement thus they can interact and play with light whilst they are waiting for the train.
Mobile Safety Zone - Help where you need it
A mobile help zone which integrates a security camera, light and help button and interacts wirelessly with the security centre to create a safe zone that can be relocated to problem areas around the station.
